Background of the Study
Phonetic articulation is a key factor in effective public speaking, especially during Nigerian cultural festivals where announcers play a pivotal role in conveying event details and energizing audiences. This study evaluates the phonetic articulation of announcers in such events, focusing on aspects like pronunciation clarity, intonation, and rhythmic delivery. Cultural festivals in Nigeria are vibrant, multisensory experiences where effective oral communication enhances audience engagement and contributes to the event’s overall atmosphere. By analyzing recordings of announcers during various cultural festivals, the research aims to document the phonetic techniques employed and assess their effectiveness in delivering clear, impactful messages. The study also considers the influence of local dialects and the adaptation of traditional speech patterns to modern public speaking requirements. This investigation provides insights into the interplay between traditional cultural expression and contemporary communication demands, highlighting the importance of phonetic precision in enhancing the success of public events (Ibrahim, 2023; Okafor, 2024; Adebayo, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of phonetic articulation in public events, there is limited research on announcer performance at Nigerian cultural festivals. Variability in pronunciation and intonation may lead to unclear messaging, affecting audience comprehension and event dynamics (Ibrahim, 2023). The absence of systematic evaluation of phonetic techniques hinders the development of training programs for announcers, which is essential for maintaining high standards in public event communication (Okafor, 2024). This study addresses the gap by examining the phonetic attributes of announcers, aiming to provide recommendations for enhancing clarity and engagement during cultural festivals (Adebayo, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze the phonetic articulation of announcers in cultural festivals.

  • To evaluate the impact of articulation on audience engagement.

  • To propose strategies for improving announcer performance.

Research Questions

  • What phonetic features characterize effective announcer performance?

  • How does articulation affect message clarity at cultural festivals?

  • What improvements can be made to enhance announcer delivery?

Significance of the Study
This study contributes to the field of public communication by assessing the phonetic articulation of announcers in Nigerian cultural festivals. Its findings will inform training programs and performance guidelines, ensuring clearer and more engaging public addresses (Ibrahim, 2023; Okafor, 2024; Adebayo, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of announcer performance in Nigerian cultural festivals and does not cover other public speaking contexts.

Definitions of Terms

  • Phonetic Articulation: The clarity and precision of speech sound production.

  • Announcer Performance: The delivery of spoken content at public events.

  • Cultural Festivals: Organized events celebrating traditional customs and heritage.
